Next, there is UN SYSTEMIC risk. UN systemic risk is also known as specific risk or classifiable risk. Think of it as Industry risk or Sector risk. A real life example is if you owned 20 stocks but they were all technology stocks. You might think you are diversified because you own 20 stocks, but you are not diversified sector wise. You are diversified in the tech sector but if the tech sector suffers a downturn in spending and profits, then more times than not, all your tech stocks will go down in value, not just a few. You could reduce, or diversify away, this industry specific risk by investing in stocks outside the technology sector.

Next there is COMPANY specific risk. This is one is a little easier to understand. Specific company risk is where you place too much of your investment in one specific company, and when that company does poorly then its stock will go down in value, even if the market is strong or if the sector is strong. A recent real life example would be in the financial services industry. This industry, or sector, was hit extremely hard, and the industry risk turned out to be great, but the company risk was even greater!

For instance, if you had invested all your money in the stock of Lehman Brothers, there is nothing left! But if you had diversified your investments between Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, you would not have lost everything. You would have lost money for sure due to sector risk, but you would not have lost all your money, due spreading the risk to various companies, not just one. You would have diversified away the company risk but not the sector or industry risk.

There is POLITICAL risk. Political risk is the risk that an investment’s returns could suffer as a result of political changes. The instability affecting investment returns could stem from a change in government, legislative bodies, other foreign policy makers, or military control. Political risk is also known as geopolitical risk.

Lastly, there is REINVESTMENT risk. This is the risk that future proceeds from an investment (for example, interest and dividends) will have to be reinvested at a lower interest rate. This risk is usually seen in the context of Bonds and/or CD’s. Reinvestment risk is especially evident during periods of falling interest rates where the coupon payments are reinvested at less than the yield to maturity of the current investment. This risk is particularly important to investors and retirees who are living off their current investments interest and dividends, only to see them be reduced over time due to those same reinvested proceeds producing lower future returns.

When I first started doing freelance work as a graphic designer, life was pretty simple. My daily routine consisted of finding clients who needed graphic design jobs and then producing the design work that I had gotten from my clients. As my business grew, I found my role as graphic designer decreasing and quickly transforming into the role of a manger and owner of a small advertising agency. It was a scary time for me. I was 24 years old and way outside of my comfort zone. Growth brings a unique set of challenges to an inexperienced small business owner. Especially one as ill prepared as I was. I had never had a class on running a small business, had little preparation in accounting, and had never even heard of strategic planning. During this time of rapid growth and business expansion, I would get frustrated because I was often unclear of the role I needed to fill. I had gotten into business because I was a highly skilled technician, not because I was a great manager. Everyday there were important decisions that had to be made about the business. I was sure that I was not making proper decisions and I worried about the future ramifications of those decisions. One day I sat down very frustrated and said to myself: I have to figure out what my job is.

What do I do on a daily basis as the owner of this small business?

The following is the result of that first strategic planning session in my head. I scrawled the following 3 job functions on a note pad.

1. Ensure Profitability

2. Strengthen Relationships (Clients & Vendors)

3. Market Effectively

It was a simple start. I later added 5 additional functions:

6. Communicate

7. Vision

8. Bring in Business

Finally, I crossed out Vision and brought it under #6 so it now read: Communicate the Vision.

I had a simplified set of job functions for myself as a small business owner. This piece of paper served to remind me not to get so caught up in the daily tasks at the business that I was not working on my business in the area, which I had outlined. I carried this piece of paper with me for several years. Today, It still serves as a reminder for me to pay attention to the most important job functions I have to manage in order to grow a successful small business.

The new legislation goes into effect October 1.

With a lack of federal oversight, US interchange fees have been among the highest in the world. Although the cost of processing debit cards is lower than the fees associated with credit and commercial cards, the fees are still high.

The Durbin Amendment sets a cap of 0.21 cents on debit card interchange a reduction of about 53% percent from present levels. Once the Durbin Amendment rules go into effect, businesses should renegotiate their current fee structures to ensure lower fees are passed back to them.

Provisions of the Durbin Amendment

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act was passed into law in 2010. Section 1075 of the Act, known as the Durbin Amendment, contains the following provisions:

· Allows merchants to offer discounts to customers who use cash, checks and debit cards or a competing network (e.g., the amendment would let a store that accepts Visa offer a discount for a customer to use MasterCard or Discover – currently prohibited by Visa).

· Allows merchants to set a $10 minimum for credit card transactions without a penalty from card networks.

· Prevents card networks from requiring that their debit cards be transacted exclusively on one debit network. Merchants can use a number of PIN networks for debit transactions; however, the large networks have negotiated exclusive agreements with many banks to be the sole PIN network. (The logo of the exclusive PIN network appears on bank debit cards.) The amendment enhances competition by outlawing such exclusivity.

· Requires the Federal Reserve to determine if the current interchange fee structure is both “reasonable and proportional” to the real cost of processing a debit card transaction.

Why the need for the Durbin Amendment?

The increased use of credit and debit cards by consumers has been accompanied by higher costs to merchants, often in the form of higher interchange fees.

Interchange fees, which are the lion’s share of all debit/credit card fees, cover the cost of processing a transaction. However, these fees have continued to rise despite decreases in processing costs.

Why the increases? Competition between Visa and MasterCard to attract card issuers (who receive the interchange fees) has been a driver, as has the cost of ever-more attractive reward programs (which are passed onto the merchant via the interchange rate).

Most significantly, Visa and MasterCard control 80% of card transactions; 80% of the interchange fees go to only about ten large banks. This large market share enabled price increases without significant negative competitive effects. Banks were not allowed to compete with one another or negotiate with merchants over interchange rates, and there was no constraint on Visa and MasterCard’s ability to fix the rates at unreasonable levels.

Further, merchants had limited ability to refuse payment by cards and were unable to provide customers with preferential pricing for alternative means of payment. Visa and MasterCard did not allow discrimination against the use of credit/debit cards.

Dad Said: You have to charge your friends, because your enemies won’t do business with you!

Over the years I have run across many professionals who worked very hard, but just could not seem to get their businesses off the ground. When pressed, they admitted that a lot of their time was spent working for friends and family (including the most distant of cousins) for free or substantially reduced fees. They often moaned, “I can’t charge my best friend’s third cousin twice removed! That wouldn’t be nice!”

I would have fallen victim to this syndrome myself if my father had not made his position clear in the early days of my accounting practice. Mom told me that she was tired of preparing their taxes and that from that point forward I was going to be their CPA. Since my parents had paid for all of my education, I quickly volunteered to do all of their accounting work at no charge. Mom said no but I insisted. Then Daddy stepped in with his bombshell “If you don’t charge us, we’ll go to someone else!” I caved immediately and completely. I absolutely was NOT going to suffer the embarrassment of my parents using some other CPA! I charged them.

I did not recognize the significance of charging them until sometime later when a “friend” jokingly (?) suggested that I should not charge them since we were buddies. I was able to laughingly and TRUTHFULLY say “Buddy, I charge my own parents”. I had variations of that conversations more times than I care to admit. However, I never had to have it twice with the same person.

Just for the record, Daddy routinely griped about the bill.

Dad Said: The cheapest alternative is not always the least expensive!

My dad made his living with his hands. He worked in the maintenance department at the paper mill. He also farmed, which required him to keep up various pieces of equipment such as tractors, trucks, hay balers, and hay rakes not to mention building barns, buildings and fences. All of this required tools and lots of them. In the beginning Daddy had to purchase what his limited funds would allow. Many times he sacrificed hunks of flesh due to cheap tools he appropriately referred to as “knuckle busters”. As his financial circumstances improved the quality of tools he bought improved as well. Over time his expenditures on tools decreased because with the increased quality came increased longevity of the tools, not to mention reduced damage to his hands. Cheap is not always inexpensive! You don’t have to use excel to figure that out!

In my own experience I have seen many instances of people losing massive amounts of productive time due to inadequate equipment. During one busy tax season, I spent over an hour trying to make the firm’s antiquated and persnickety fax machine send a fax to a client. I still wonder how much productive time the firm lost that year because the partners didn’t want to spend $200 on a fax machine that worked. When I had my own firm, one of my staff members commented that the fax machine didn’t want to play nice! I had a new one in place the next day. A small expenditure kept us from wasting valuable time. It also improved the morale of that particular employee. Two big wins with one small purchase. It’s hard to beat that.

Dad said: If you can do something about the problem…do it, if you can’t…don’t worry about it

This admonition is pretty self explanatory, but is often hard to do. Many business owners and executives seem to get themselves all knotted up about situations they cannot change. Furthermore, they second guess themselves on decisions they have already made. What a waste of productive time and energy! In one of his books, business guru Brian Tracy urges his readers to write down the worst thing that can happen if a particular course of action is taken. Generally, the action of writing down the worst case scenario diminishes its perceived size. If the decision maker decides he can live with the worst possible outcome, then he is free to move forward without worry, therefore significantly reducing the likelihood of that bad outcome. So…write it down…cut it down… move on.
